Summer Wedding at Boyce Thompson Arboretum

Why a Boyce Thompson Arboretum Wedding Might Be the Most Beautiful Decision You'll Ever Make

There’s a moment that happens at almost every Boyce Thompson Arboretum wedding I photograph. The couple steps into one of the garden paths — maybe the Perennial Garden with its riot of color, or the shaded walk near the historic Smith Building — and they just stop. They look around and smile at each other like they can’t believe they get to get married here. And honestly? I can’t blame them.

If you’re researching venues for your Arizona wedding and you haven’t considered the Boyce Thompson Arboretum, this post is for you. As a wedding photographer who has worked all over the state, I can say with complete confidence that this place is one of the most breathtaking — and most slept-on — wedding backdrops in the entire Southwest.

What Makes Boyce Thompson Arboretum So Special?

Boyce Thompson Arboretum sits along US Highway 60 in Superior, Arizona, nestled into the base of Picketpost Mountain about an hour east of Phoenix. It’s Arizona’s oldest and largest botanical garden, spanning over 135 acres of Sonoran Desert landscape with plants collected from arid regions all over the world.

That scope is part of what makes it so incredible for photography. In a single afternoon, you can move through towering saguaros, a lush butterfly garden, a historic stone greenhouse, winding desert trails, and manicured perennial beds. No two backdrops look the same, which means no two wedding galleries ever look the same either.

The Best Wedding Ceremony Spots on the Grounds

The arboretum offers several distinct ceremony locations, and each one has its own character. Here’s a quick breakdown of the main options:

Butterfly Garden

Intimate and sheltered, with towering trees and a natural canopy. Perfect for smaller ceremonies with a fairytale feel.

Perennial Garden

Colorful and open, accommodating up to 50 guests. Great for natural light and vibrant floral backdrops.

Desert Legume Garden

One of the larger spaces, fitting up to 75 guests, surrounded by native desert plantings and wide sky.

Historic Smith Building Patio

The most spacious option — up to 100 guests — with the warmth of historic architecture. Available after 4 p.m.

Australian Pavilion

A smaller, intimate setting with a unique plant collection that makes for truly one-of-a-kind portraits.

Tips for Your Wedding at Boyce Thompson Arboretum

Time your ceremony with the light. This is the single most important photography decision you’ll make at the Boyce Thompson Arboretum. The arboretum’s hours vary by season, but in summer months it closes in the early afternoon, which can be tricky. Fall and winter weddings have a real advantage here. The sun sets earlier, meaning you can get gorgeous golden-hour portraits while still being on the grounds. I always recommend building at least an hour of portrait time after your ceremony, ideally as the sun is dropping toward the horizon.

Dress for the terrain. The arboretum’s paths are beautiful but they are real desert trails — think packed dirt, gravel, and occasional uneven surfaces. If you’re wearing heels, wedges or block heels will serve you much better than stilettos. Grooms and wedding parties should be aware that it can get warm, especially in spring and early fall. Lightweight fabrics photograph beautifully and will keep everyone more comfortable.

Every wedding venue has its own kind of magic, and Boyce Thompson Arboretum’s is rooted in something that can’t be manufactured: 135 acres of living, breathing desert landscape that has been growing and evolving for nearly a century. When you get married here, you’re not renting a backdrop. You’re stepping into something real.

If you’re considering a Boyce Thompson Arboretum wedding and you’re still looking for a photographer who knows the grounds, loves desert light, and will show up genuinely excited to be there — I’d love to hear from you.
