If you’ve lived in Arizona, and particularly around the Phoenix and East Valley area for a while, you’ve heard about the wild Salt River horses in Maricopa County. If you’ve tubed down the river, or spent any time around the various recreational areas (such as Phon D Sutton, Coon Bluff, etc), you’ve probably even seen them.
It’s always a treat to see these beautiful horses out in the wild, and capture a few photos of them. These are from a recent morning trip I took to Coon Bluff in hopes of a colorful sunrise, but ended up with some great shots of the Salt River horses. While they’re loved by the residents of Arizona, they need a voice, and people to help look out for them. The Salt River Wild Horse Management Group (SRWHMG) works to protect these horses. As of 2020, there are fences going up that could endanger the horses and take away from their natural surroundings. Contact the SRWHMG to see what you can do to help.
