Family Portraits at the Superstition Mountains
If you’re looking for places to take photos in Mesa, AZ, or near there, the Superstition Mountains offer a beautiful backdrop. Lost Dutchman State Park offers access to some great locations to shoot around the mountains (permit is required for portrait photography), and there are many different trails/pull offs along the way.
When I first connected with Jodee to do her family portrait session, we talked about a couple different locations, and decided on doing something in Apache Junction, with the Superstition Mountains in the background. We decided on First Water Trailhead for her Superstition Mountain family photos, as it offers some great views of the mountains. (note: this is a very popular trail and photo location with a small parking area, so plan accordingly).
As with the majority of my sessions, we planned a shoot around sunset, to get the best possible lighting and avoid the harness midday sun. I got to our selected location a little early to scout it out and check the conditions, only to find it blocked off and closed due to wildfire hazards. I quickly contacted Jodee to let her know, and we made plans to meet nearby and try another location.
Thankfully, she’s super laid back and totally understood about the change of plans being out of our control. Luckily, I had previously scouted a potential backup location so we wouldn’t be stressed to find another spot closeby. However, this didn’t come without a few hiccups.
It was a completely new area to me, so I had to spend a few quick moments surveying our options to see what we had to work with, and adjust our plans/poses accordingly. And, we were there a little early, combined with the sun going down a little later than when we had scheduled the session, we had more bright light that I prefer. But, we adjusted, and waited a few minutes for the sun to go down, and get closer to our preferred shooting conditions.
Here are a few photos from her Superstition Mountain family photos.
